House Criminal Jurisprudence Hearing
Monday, April 8, 2019 at 2:00 pm
The first hearing of this legislative session regarding bills related to the bail industry will be held Monday April 8, 2019 at 2:00 pm. Whitmire/Murr’s bill which attacks the bail industry is set for hearing and we ask you to come join us in opposing this HB 1323.
ACTION ITEM NO. 1 (THIS IS NEW)-
We have set up a page to send emails to the committee members like we did last session.
There are three bills listed and the committee members are listed under each bill. When you click on a committee member’s name, it pulls up your email program and auto-populates the address, the subject and a message to the legislator setting out our position on the bill. Do this for each legislator for each bill. If you do it on your phone it will only take a few minutes. Send the link to your family, friends, employees, etc. Share the link with everyone.
ACTION ITEM NO. 2-
PLEASE MAKE PLANS TO COME TO AUSTIN ON MONDAY (IN TWO DAYS) TO SIGN CARDS OPPOSING THIS BILL THAT WILL HURT OUR INDUSTRY.
The Whitmire/Murr bill is a continuation of the fight from last session. The bill says that it authorizes Preventative Detention, but in reality it makes it more difficult to detain anyone. The bill also mandates the use of a risk assessment to be used statewide; and requires that justices of the peace review criminal histories of defendants before setting bail.
THIS IS A CALL FOR ALL HANDS ON DECK. YOUR INDUSTRY NEEDS YOU. MAKE PLANS TO COME AND TO BRING OTHERS. NOW IS THE TIME!
You do not have to testify. You will be signing cards opposing certain bills and supporting other bills. This is very important.
